I must react to Brady Snyder's article titled "A bold vision for Salt Lake malls." I have no quarrel with Mr. Pastore's vision for Crossroads and ZCMI, although many of us in the city are anxious to see the plans in specific. No wonder Nordstrom says it will move to Gateway or leave the city when the vision includes no specifics and, as Pastore said in your article, that the development may take "five, 10, 15, even 20 years."
My strongest reaction to his comments comes from his presumption that "Gateway . . . might have reason to worry." He goes on to suggest that Gateway may need to "shed some of its retail components to survive," presumably to make way for his "vision." It is a positive step for Pastore to begin defining plans for the Crossroads and ZCMI centers, but it is presumptuous for him to suggest that "Gateway should become a complement of entertainment and residential," implying that retailing belongs mainly in his projects. Pastore should limit his vision to projects of his own client. Comments and opinions that are negative do not help to build bridges and connections between our downtown, Gateway and Main Street.
