A proposed guns policy in Jordan School District could get a makeover to appear more like neighboring Granite District's.
Jordan two weeks ago floated a policy allowing district employees with concealed-weapons permits to carry guns to work but eliminate insurance coverage for those who fire weapons for any reason other than self-defense.
The language would come under the district's "scope of employment" rules and has been approved by the schools' insurer.
Tuesday, the board looked at adding language to require employees to keep legally concealed guns in their immediate possession. There also was talk of ensuring employees did not discuss concealed weapons or permits with students or colleagues while at work.
Granite School District's proposed policy, expected to come up for final vote next month, includes similar measures.
Jordan board members also want to ensure policies for school volunteers, and maybe contractors, uphold similar weapon rules.
The proposed additions likely will be discussed in a study session next month.
The proposals aim to align policy with a 2003 law, clarifying conflicts on whether concealed-weapons permit holders could carry guns on campuses.
