Sloth is one of the seven deadly sins, but we would never know it to look at government in Washington. Its intellectual sloth is breathtaking.
For example, a few hours after President Bush signed a bill enacting tax cuts, he signed legislation raising the amount the U.S. government can borrow by a record $984 billion to $7.3 trillion. It is difficult to even imagine debt that huge.
Citizens should now start supporting candidates who have honesty, energy and intelligence to do hard tasks. Our elected leaders need to review all government programs and find ways to end programs that would be better done by the private sector. They should reform our tax system. They should study the military, reduce it and streamline it where necessary.
We should know the score. Our current leaders believe we should be placated by tax cuts. Government spending policies and taxing structure are the real problem.
