SPANISH FORK — A University of Utah professor donated $5,000 this week to create a scholarship in the name of his former teacher at Springville High School.

Neil Cotter graduated in 1975 from Springville, where he took AP English from Patricia Kauffman. Cotter went on to earn a Ph.D. at Stanford University and is now a professor of electrical engineering at the U.

Cotter donated the money to the Nebo Foundation for Excellence, which announced the Patricia Kauffman National Honor Society Scholarship.

Cotter said the scholarship was something he wanted to do for Kauffman since he left Springville to attend the California Institute of Technology and decided that the high school and Kauffman had prepared him well.
