PROVO — Thomas Edison, Michael Jordan, Albert Einstein, Jessica Lynch and Harry Potter were among the names mentioned at Mountain View High School's graduation ceremony Thursday evening.
While this colorful group comes from many different eras and backgrounds, including the big screen, speakers used each reference as an example of dedication and heroism.
"We can't always determine what forces will come our way," Principal Richard Clark said, "but we can always choose how we will react to life's challenges."
Clark focused on recent hardships as evidence that students can rise to difficult occasions.
"We didn't ask for economic crisis. We didn't ask for multiple conflict on foreign lands. We didn't ask for emotional stress to families," Clark explained, "but this has been a time for America's heroes."
Student David Romney shared similar sentiments.
"There is no greater teacher than experience," David Romney said. "We can all ultimately find success in our lives."
The 450 graduating students attained success in academic and physical fields.
The boy's cross country team took home a national championship, while five other teams finished first in the state. Academically, the school boasts six Sterling Scholar finalists, three National Merit finalists and the highest state percentage of passing grades on Advancement Placement tests.
"We must not be afraid to fail," Merilee Nicol said. "Success feeds on failure. If we cannot conquer obstacles, we cannot succeed."
