I read with interest — and disappointment — Eric Samuelson's letter in the Sunday May 25th edition of the paper. Interest, because I regard Samuelson as a man of intellect and letters; disappointment, because he didn't appear to use either in his opinion.

The major points in his letter offered no new insights. They were, at best, a retread of just about every criticism leveled by the Democrats at the Bush administration. He castigated the Bush team for being arrogant, ignorant and incompetent in theirforeign policy — again standard diatribe.

I am weary of partisan hatemongering that does nothing to advance a sensible debate about this administration and where it is taking us. As a people, we need to make certain the entire government safeguards our liberties. And finally, when are we going to be free of the continual whining about the outcome of the last election? For those who want to make the case that Bush did not win the presidency, I will make the case that Al Gore certainly lost it.
