SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The Legislature gave final approval Thursday to a $100 million bailout for the struggling Oakland School District.

The legislation now goes to Gov. Gray Davis, who will probably sign it, spokesman Russ Lopez said.

The emergency loan will relieve the Oakland district of its debt, estimated at more than $70 million by the end of this school year.

But it also means the state superintendent of public instruction will take over the district's schools and its 47,000 students until it pays back the money.
