1920~2003

Reid Wheeler Young died May 28, 2003 at the Utah State Veterans Nursing Home with his wife Lilly at his side. Reid was a kind man who lived life simply and dutifully. He took great pride in his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He was a devoted church worker, husband, father and grandfather.

Reid was born March 10, 1920 in Gannett, Idaho to Angus and Elva Wheeler Young. He graduated from Hailey, Idaho High School and attended the University of Utah. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II at Tarawa and Saipan, Japan achieving the rank of Corporal.

On June 23, 1942, Reid married Sylvia Probst in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and they were together for 51 years until her passing in 1993. Sylvia preceded him in death. He married Lilly Schmidt Simper Gundersen on April 19, 1995.

Reid was a Letter Carrier for the Midvale Post Office. An active member of the LDS Church he served as Bishop of the Garden View Ward, on the High Council, an LDS Mission to California as a young man, and later with his wife, Sylvia, served missions to Nauvoo and New York. He also served as an ordinance worker in the Jordan River Temple.

Survivors: wife, Lilly; sons, Bob (Chris), Salt Lake; Jim (Carol), Salem, Oregon; Mike (Jean), Salt Lake; daughter-in-law, Steven's wife, Mary Jackson of Corvallis, Oregon; 26 grandchildren 27 great-grand-children; children from marriage to Lilly: Pamela Goff, West Jordan; Roger Simper, Cedar City, Utah; brothers and sister, James, Nevada; Sherm, Washington; Nona Hampton, California. Preceded in death by a son, Steven; brother, Angus "Junior"; sisters, Althea Scott, Rhea Mae Coleman, and Wanda Young.

The family expresses appreciation to the wonderful staff at Utah State Veterans Nursing Home, and especially Christa and Miney.

Funeral services Monday, June 2, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at Garden View Ward Chapel, 7825 So. Olympus Circle (220 West), Midvale. Friends may call at Goff Mortuary, 8090 So. State, Sunday 6-8 p.m. or Monday at the church from 9:35-10:45 a.m. Interment, Midway City Cemetery, Midway, Utah.
