PROVO — The dramatic music at American Fork High School's graduation ceremony was almost more than Keith Swain's heart could bear.
The Cavemen concert choir, orchestra and wind symphony combined to perform a moving rendition of "Come Thou Font of Every Blessing," a piece that truly moved the Alpine Board of Education vice president.
"I guarantee you'll not attend any high school graduation in the state of Utah or very few in the nation where you will witness as many talented musicians as are here today," Principal Glen R. Clark said.
The 350 graduates of American Fork High School were told to muster their strength to follow their dreams.
"For though we cannot direct the wind, we can adjust our sails," said Tyler Terry, senior class president. "Our standards will act as a strong rudder to keep us on course when others about us may be brought out of safe waters."
Graduates thanked parents and teachers. Friends and family have helped the students learn how they should live their lives as they go forward, Terry said.
"Our goals, dreams and values are like road maps that have been laid out for us," salutatorian Claire Bangerter said. "If we stick to them, we won't get sidetracked by the hazards and distracting conditions."
The journey for the class of 2003 is far from over. Graduates should remember life is a journey, not a destination, and to enjoy the ride, salutatorian Brittany Kofoed said.
"It's a choice. Simply when things go wrong, don't go with them. It all boils down to attitude. Even though we have pain, we don't need to be a pain."
