Don F. Winward, age 81, of Vernal passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 28, 2003.

He was born on Jan. 7, 1922 to Alfonzo and Mable Goldie Collier Winward in Sunnyside, UT. He married Elna Gray on January 27, 1941 in Vernal, UT and was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on September 18, 1963.

Don attended school in Salt Lake City, Brigham City, Idaho and Uintah high school. He worked for the C.C.C. camp, was a member of the National Guard, he was inducted into the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans of Uintah Basin #10.

Don owned and operated Winward Trucking Co. He drove most of the states in the U.S., which amounted to over three million miles without an accident or citation.

Don was an active member of the LDS church, holding office of High Priest in the Vernal 8th Ward. Don and Elna moved to the Wasatch front in 1954 and then moved back to Vernal in 1988. Don loved to go hunting, fishing, and camping with his family. A great joy was to spend the winters on the desert as he especially loved the desert.

Don is survived by his wife, Elna; sons, Robert (Diana) of Sandy, UT; Clyde (Judy) of Florida; Gaylon (Peggie) of Riverton, UT; Jeffrey of West Valley, UT; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; brothers, Dale of Roosevelt, UT and Brent of Sandy, UT; sister, Sharon Labrum of St. George, UT. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Max; sister, Lela; daughter-in-laws, Gayle and Judy; and 3 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Monday, June 2, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Vernal 8th Ward LDS Chapel, 1270 W. 1500 S. Friends may call on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary and on Monday at the Chapel one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Vernal Memorial Park under the direction of Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary.
