The American Medical Association has elected Dr. John C. Nelson, a Salt Lake City obstetrician and gynecologist, as president-elect of its board of trustees.

Nelson is the immediate past secretary-treasurer of the AMA board. He has also served as chairman of the AMA Council on Legislation. He has traveled extensively as an AMA representative, promoting the group's "Stop America's Violence Everywhere" campaign.

He was chosen recently to represent the AMA on the National Advisory Council to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Also, he negotiated final television rating guidelines with national specialty societies and children's organizations on the AMA's behalf.

In addition to his AMA leadership roles, Nelson has served as president of the Utah Medical Association and Salt Lake County Medical Board. He assisted the American College of Emergency Physicians in developing guidelines to evaluate sexual assault victims.

An active advocate on the medical liability reform front, Nelson also continues his private practice and has active privileges at two Salt Lake hospitals.
