Softball, baseball All-State fete set

SHARE Softball, baseball All-State fete set

The Deseret News softball and baseball All-State awards ceremony for first-team selections will be June 19 at 6 p.m. at Juan Diego High School in Draper.

Each first-team selection may invite two guests. A light dinner will be served.

Certificates will be mailed out to the schools of the second-team and honorable-mention selections.

OLYMPUS CAMP: Titan basketball coach Matt Barnes is holding basketball camps beginning Monday. They will run from Monday through Thursday for the next four weeks. Camps are open to first-graders through seniors in high school. Players can register by calling Olympus High at 273-2000. The cost of each four-day session is $25. Players can participate in one week or all four weeks.

ALTA CAMP: The Alta High 2003 boys basketball camp will run from June 16-20 at Alta High. Individual camps will be held for players from 4th to 6th grades; 7th to 9th grades; and 10th to 12th grades. The cost is $50.

Registrations are being taken at Salt Lake County Recreation in Murray.

HIGH SCHOOL AWARDS: Individual and team athletic 2002-03 champions throughout Utah will be honored at the Best of State Champions night at the South Towne Expo Center on June 20. With nearly 1,300 athletes expected, this is the first time high school athletes have been honored in any state in an event of this level.

On behalf of the Best of State organization, a spectrum of celebrity sports figures will award medals to all 1A through 5A girls and boys state champions. Celebrity presenters will include football legend Merlin Olsen, baseball star Dale Murphy, world middleweight boxing champion Gene Fullmer, former football pro Sean Knight, two-time Superbowl champion Jason Buck, Olympian Henry Marsh and X-Games gold medallist and speed climber Aaron Shamy, together with sports media members Wesley Ruff, Kathy Aiken, Brad Rock, Marius Payton and Craig Bolerjack.
