PROVO — A hearing for a former Orem police officer and POST instructor has been postponed three weeks.
John Weatherly, 60, appeared in 4th District Court Thursday with his attorney, Gary Weight, to determine if Weatherly will request a preliminary hearing on two second-degree counts of child sex abuse.
At preliminary hearings, prosecutors must prove to a judge that they have enough evidence to take the case to trial.
According to prosecutors, Weatherly was charged after a 14-year-old neighbor girl told police she was inappropriately touched on two occasions last August.
Weatherly, who retired after a 20-year career with Orem's Department of Public Safety, worked as a driving instructor for the state police academy from 1997 until August 2002. Officials with the academy said Weatherly's instructor contract has been suspended pending the outcome of the charges.
In court Thursday, Weight said he needed more time to work on the case before making any decisions about a preliminary hearing.
A new hearing has been scheduled for July 10.
