Salt Lake police are investigating an apparent accidental shooting that left a 15-year-old boy in critical condition in a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the head Wednesday night.

About 6 p.m. police were called to a house near 550 South and 1000 West, where they found the injured boy and a small handgun, Salt Lake Police Lt. John Cribbs said.

The boy's family does not speak English. Police used translators but some of the details are still unclear, Cribbs said.

The boy was with a friend when the shooting occurred. Police are not saying who shot the boy. They do not believe the shooting was intentional or an attempted suicide, Cribbs said.
