President Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will quietly celebrate his 93rd birthday today.

Born in Salt Lake City on June 23, 1910, he has served as the 15th president of the church since March 12, 1995, and has been a general authority for more than 45 years.

He is expected to go about church business as usual on his birthday and have a private celebration at home in the evening. Since a birthday gala was held in the Conference Center in 2000 on his 90th birthday, his most recent ones have been observed at home.

Staff members and associates were planning a small gathering to honor him on Tuesday.

President Hinckley is the fourth-oldest prophet to lead the LDS Church. President David O. Mckay served to age 96, until his death; President Joseph Fielding Smith was 95 and President Ezra Taft Benson, 94.
