I chuckled at Ms. Kate Toomey's letter regarding the effectiveness of Salt Lake City's orange pedestrian flags. She poured a Big Gulp-size dose of accolades to Mayor Anderson for his "innovative, community-building ideas." Out of curiosity, I thought it'd be fun to see whose ideas these really were. A little research indicates that Spanish Fork was the first city in Utah to implement pedestrian flags at crosswalks in early 2000. All other pedestrian safety measures for which our mayor takes credit come from a Pedestrian Safety Master Plan drafted back in 1996.
