I am troubled by the amount of criticism that Alec Cannon's letters to the editor published in the DesNews have received. He has argued that Annika Sorenstam should not be denied the opportunity to compete in the PGA on the basis of gender. Cannon's critics have argued that she should not be allowed to compete because there are two leagues: the LPGA (for women) and the PGA (for men).
To his critics, I pose the following question: Would you also argue that a freshman high school athlete more talented and able than his peers should be denied the opportunity to compete at the varsity level because there are two leagues: one for freshmen and sophomores and one for upperclassmen?
Annika Sorenstam is the top women's golfer in the world. She is much more talented and able than any of the other women in the LPGA. She is also more talented and able than many of the men in the PGA. All I see is an athlete who wants to improve her game by challenging herself.
