Though I may be at risk of not being hired by another department, something needs to be said. I am one of the police officers with Salt Lake Community College. We are all losing our jobs. Let me tell you a quick version of what has been happening:

On May 15, 2003, the officers of SLCC received letters that stated, in part: "As the President designee, I regret to inform you that your position with Salt Lake Community College will be eliminated and that your last day will be June 30, 2003. Please contact the Human Resources Office for information on the check-out procedures of the College."

This was a huge shock. Now, place on top of that the horror of the following statement: "I think there's two reasons. We want to upgrade and have certified police services available on all campuses of the college, that's a major gap now," Peter Genereaux, May 15, 2003. Since then, the news has painted the SLCC police as bumbling idiots who might as well be criminals.

I will gladly show anyone my credentials if they care to ask. We keep our mandatory yearly training to keep our certifications. I have personally been through the physical fitness, polygraph, b-pad, psychological, drug screening and written tests.

I cannot stand by while our reputations are being stomped into the ground. What have we done to deserve such a horrendous punishment?
