CEDAR CITY — The 18th-annual Utah Summer Games, Utah's largest amateur summer sports festival featuring nearly 10,000 athletes competing for the gold in all age and skill levels, gets under way with medal competition in three events this weekend.

Racquetball will officially kick off the Games today and will run through Saturday at the Sorenson Physical Education Building's Aquatic Center on the Southern Utah University campus. Meanwhile, Mototrials, which feature dirt motorcycles jumping from rock-to-rock and is part of the Utah Action Sports Festival IV, will be held at the Three Peaks Recreation Area west of Cedar City Friday and Saturday. The weekend will also feature Arm Wrestling at the Heritage Center Outdoor Stage, located on 100 N. Main Street. Weigh-in will begin at 9 a.m., with competition following at 10 a.m.

This year's USG competition will feature 37 sports, with the opening ceremony and cauldron lighting taking place Thursday, June 12, at 8:30 p.m., at Eccles Coliseum at SUU. Country music group Restless Heart will headline the festivities, which include the torch relay leading up to the Cauldron lighting and a spectacular fireworks display by Fireworks America. The closing ceremonies will be held June 20-21, as part of the Cedar City Stampede Rodeo at the Cross Hollows Multi-Purpose Arena.
