A man who was on an afternoon hike with his family collapsed and died Monday.

About 3 p.m. Monday Jeffrey Scharman, 54, died of a heart attack only about 300 yards up the trail leading to Lake Mary in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Jay Southam said.

A medical helicopter from the University of Utah landed in the canyon with the intention of flying Scharman to the hospital for treatment. The paramedic crew tried to resuscitate Scharman before lifting him from the canyon, but the man died, Southam said.
