As a child learning about the Great Depression, I erroneously believed the rich government officials and businessmen felt the pinch, grew ashamed of their obscene wealth accrued from the misfortune of the majority of American people and devoted their moral energy toward their fellow citizens.
Years later I discovered the truth in the matter. This was the time when the rich got even richer.
Now that we are in the beginning of the Great Depression II, the opportunity to achieve the American Dream for most is simply not going to happen. Perhaps the best one can do is to remind their children that simplifying their lives isn't all that bad, the rich aren't as "blessed" as they would like you to believe and they don't really need that Mercedes to live a meaningful and satisfying life.
