KEARNS — A two-alarm fire ripped through a Kearns house Tuesday, causing an estimated $70,000 damage.

The fire started just before 11 a.m. at about 5100 West and 5030 South. When crews arrived, they found heavy fire coming from a three-car garage, said Salt Lake County Fire Capt. Jay Ziolkowski.

The fire destroyed the garage and one car inside and burned the basement and part of the attic, he said. But crews were able to extinguish the blaze and save the rest of the house by attacking the flames from both the inside and outside of the house.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Tuesday, but Ziolkowski said officials were checking into an unconfirmed report that it may have been started by fireworks.
