Death of inmate is under investigation

HURRICANE, Washington County — The weekend death of an inmate housed at Purgatory Correctional Facility under a medical watch remains under investigation, said Rob Tersigni, chief deputy for the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Raymond Boyett, 54, of Toquerville, was found dead early Saturday morning a couple of hours after jail staff last checked on him, Tersigni said.

Boyett was arrested Aug. 27 on a no-bail warrant for a third-degree felony charge of suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

He was placed in an isolated medical cell after falling and hitting his head on Friday, said Tersigni, who added there were other concerns about medication Boyett was reportedly taking.

Medical staff were called to the cell at 5:10 a.m. Saturday and Boyett was pronounced dead. There was no apparent cause of death, Tersigni said.

Boyett's body was taken to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy. Results of the autopsy will take at least a week.
