The California Republican strategy of using budget deficits and fiscal mismanagement against Gov. Gray Davis is a bad omen for the Bush re-election. The federal surplus is gone with only red ink on the horizon. Government spending has grown exponentially since 2000, the largest increase since Lyndon Johnson's Great Society. Health and Human Services growth was 10 percent; the GSA was up 62 percent and GSA Manufactures up 100 percent since 2000. This growth does not include Defense, Homeland Security, Afghanistan, and Iraq spending. If fiscal irresponsibility is the criteria for recall, President Bush should hope California Republicans don't take note in the upcoming election.
