SOCCER: Senior All-American Aleisha Rose was named Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Cougars (4-1-1) to a 2-1 record last week and setting three school records.
Rose, a native of Lakewood, Colo., provided much of the offensive firepower for the Cougars this week as the team recorded a 5-0 route over Southern Utah and a 2-1 upset victory over No. 14 Kentucky.
VOLLEYBALL: BYU setter Lauren Richards earned Mountain West Conference Volleyball Co-Player of the Week honors, marking her first career award.
A 6-0 sophomore from Orem, Richards entered last week's Mizuno Classic with just seven starting assignments as setter for BYU, but was able to lead the Cougars to the tournament title.
VOLLEYBALL: Junior setter Kelsie Kartchner and sophomore outside hitter Danielle Leichliter were both named to the Notre Dame Shamrock Invitational all-tournament team following career performances over the weekend. Kartchner averaged 12.14 assists, 2.14 digs, 2.00 kills, 0.57 blocks and 0.43 service aces on the tournament.
FOOTBALL: Utah State tight end Chris Cooley, a Mackey Award candidate, suffered a fracture in his foot in the Aggies' game against Arizona State on Saturday and is expected to be out four to six weeks it was announced Monday night.
Cooley, who leads the Sun Belt Conference and ranks 35th in the nation, including second among tight ends, in receptions with 6.0 per game, injured his foot in the second half in USU's 26-16 loss to the 16th-ranked Sun Devils.
Meanwhile, tailback David Fiefia was named the Sun Belt Conference offensive player of the week. Fiefia became the first USU player to earn an honor from the new conference.
SOCCER: Utah State soccer (4-2) ends its four-game homestand as it faces in-state rival Utah today at 4 p.m. The Aggies head to Portland State next week to start their second road-trip of the season.
VOLLEYBALL: Utah State will begin Big West Conference play this weekend as the Aggies travel to Cal State Northridge on Thursday and to No. 24 Pacific on Saturday. Both matches will begin at 8 p.m. (MST).
Utah State is 4-3-1 all-time against Cal State Northridge, which includes a 3-1 record since the Matadors joined the league prior to the 2001 season. Last season, USU defeated CSN at home in three games and lost to the Matadors on the road in four games. USU is 5-25 all-time against Pacific, which includes an 0-11 road record. Last year, USU lost both of its matches to the Tigers in three games.
GOLF: UNLV leads the Oregon Invitational after the first round of play with a team total of 295, followed by Portland State (298), Texas Christian (307), UC Irvine (312) and Washington State (313). Last week's Big Sky Golf Player of the Week Lynsey Myers of Weber State is in sixth place with a 74. She trails Portland State's Danielle Reilly who had a two-under 70, followed by teammate Sarah Tiller at 71.
