Cash-only bail stays for rape suspect

PROVO — A $25,000 cash-only bail will stay in place for a Provo man accused of raping and sodomizing a 10-year-old girl.

Fourth District Judge Anthony Schofield ruled on Wednesday that the bail could only be satisfied by a cash payment — thus resolving a discrepancy in court records as to the type of bail Antonio Guzman was entitled to.

Prosecutors allege that Guzman, 31, repeatedly raped the girl, who was living at his Provo home. He is charged with five first-degree felony counts of child rape, seven first-degree felony counts of sodomy on a child and four first-degree felony counts of aggravated sex abuse of a child.

Defense attorney Gunda Jarvis has suggested that Guzman might enter a plea agreement in the case. A plea hearing is set for Oct. 1.
