SANDY — The Alta High volleyball team knew it had the talent to compete with the state's top teams. Coach Mike Gansauge said it took something besides confidence to help them win games, however.

"With this team, we're a really young team," he said after Alta beat fourth-ranked Bingham in five games, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17, 21-25, 15-10. "So right now, we're just trying to stay loose and have fun . . . That's been one of the best parts about this year is that they've bonded so quickly and they get a long great."

The team seemed to be having a great time as the Hawks battled a talented Miner squad on their home court. Both teams were in every game, and the players treated fans to lengthy rallies and some great plays.

Gansauge was most impressed with how his team worked together, especially since several younger players were asked to come in and play positions they normally don't in an effort to deal with Bingham's great outside hitting.

"We were just trying to improve on what we did Tuesday," he said, referring to the Hawks' win over Copper Hills. "I thought it was a great team effort . . . It's tough to come in off the bench and play when you're cold."

And then, of course, the Hawks got great games from starters Sydney Anderson, who had 19 kills, Rochelle Johnson, who had five solo blocks, and Bethany Carron, who was strong hitting from the outside.

The team had a lot to deal with as Bingham played scrappy and didn't give up a single point without a fight. But then again, that's what Alta expected.

"We knew it was an important game," Gansauge said. "Bingham always has a good team."
