I listened to the recent hearings conducted by the Salt Lake City Council dealing with the question about allowing Nordstrom to move to The Gateway. I would encourage the members of the council to weigh heavily the advice of the people who actually develop shopping centers, who have their fingers on the pulse of the major retailers and have a wealth of practical experience.
Listening to the presentations at the hearing reminded me of the old saying: "Those that can do, those that can't become consultants." Organizations such as ERA and the Urban Land Institute are consultants and theoreticians. It was obvious in the hearings that their recommendations were based on secondhand observations and should not be given very much weight in making the tough decision that faces the Salt Lake City Council.
