Orem Kiwanis Invitational New winners for Kiwanis meet

OREM — While some of Utah's top high school runners took the weekend off in preparation for next Saturday's Great American Race in North Caroliina, the annual Orem Kiwanis Invitational at UVSC had a new look Saturday afternoon, and new winners.

Viewmont's Brian McKenna took top honors among the varsity boys, crossing the 5K course in a time of 16:31.5. The Viking junior had little trouble besting the rest of the 5A field and finished first in the combined boys' standings with a 21-second margin over Mountain View's JB Martineau. The Bruins ran only JVs and reserves at Kiwanis, as even the Mountain View second-team varsity runners are planning to go to North Carolina next week.

Daniel Urry of Lehi was the top boy in the 1A-3A combined race, finishing in a time of 16:55.2, fourth fastest of all boys entered.

In girls competition, Bingham junior Kit Zeigle continued her brilliant fall with a win in both 5A and combined totals, finishing in a time of 18:56.9. Lone Peak's Katie Bowen was first in 4A girls at 19:15.2, while Shanda Durfey of Wayne was the top female in the 1A-3A combined race. Her time of 21:23.9 was 15th fastest overall among the ladies.

Even with the "B" team running for the Mountain View boys, the Bruins won the team title with a score of 40. Lone Peak was second at 92, and Bingham third at 99. In combined girls' team scoring, it was Skyline with the victory at 80 points, edging out Mountain View reserves with 86 and Bingham with 89. Timpanogos was fourth at 90 points.

Combined with the Murray Invitational run Friday afternoon, most of the state's top programs competed this weekend, Davis and Mountain View being the notable exceptions. Next Saturday, those teams and several other individuals will journey to Charlotte for the Carolina races, while Bingham will to go the Stanford Invite in Palo Alto. The annual Wahsatch Rendevous will also summon local runners to the Cottonwood Complex for the uniquely-formated event, where races are held for seeded runners with the same seed. That means 14 races overall between varsity boys and girls teams.
