BYU Flashback

SCORE: Stanford 18, BYU 14 Records: BYU 2-2 (1-0 in the Mountain West), Stanford 2-0

OFFENSE: The Cougars were anemic, putting together only two sustained drives on the day. They had four turnovers, including a key interception deep in their own territory late in the game that set up Stanford's game-winning touchdown.

DEFENSE: The Cardinal offense spent much of the game on BYU's side of the field, but the Cougar defense regularly rose to the occasion. Stanford running back Kenneth Tolon was the only player who had success against the BYU 'D', gaining 141 yards and scoring a touchdown. The Cardinal managed just 200 yards of total offense. GRADE: B+

SPECIAL TEAMS: While punter Matt Payne enjoyed another good outing, mistakes took a toll on BYU. James Allen fielded a kickoff and went out of bounds on the Cougar one-yard line. Later, the special teams surrendered a 68-yard punt return that set up a field goal. GRADE: C

NEXT UP: Air Force at BYU, Saturday, 1 p.m.
