Provo happy to get the tie

PROVO — After getting drilled by Timpview 8-0 last Thursday, Provo girls' soccer coach Cesar Cardoso was more than pleased watching his team battle to a 2-2 tie with Springville on Tuesday in Region 6 girls' soccer.

"Today we came ready to win," Cardoso said. "This was a very typical game between us. It is very competitive. We were able to control most of the game and create some great opportunities. Sometimes the ball doesn't want to go in."

The one Bulldog who had success finding the back of the net was Jana Davis.

In the 15th minute Springville took a 1-0 lead when Jamie Hatfield connected on a 20-yard free kick that curled into the left corner of net.

Provo then tied the game in the 28th minute when Davis scored on a penalty kick after a Provo player was fouled inside the box. Provo had opportunities to take the lead late in the first half but Red-Devil goalie Hannah Silvey came up with several incredible saves to keep the game tied at halftime.

Davis gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead in the 56th minute when she floated a shot over Silvey and into the goal from inside the right side of the 18.

Melissa Huntington assisted Davis on the Bulldog goal.

"She's fast and she's lethal," Springville coach Mikelle Roth said on Davis.

Springville rallied to tie the game at two when Jessica Treasure finished a cross-pass from Hatfield in the 69th minute.

"I think when we went down we really picked it up," Roth said.

To end regulation Provo was unsuccessful in three consecutive corner kicks.

Springville controlled the second overtime and had several shots on goal but Bulldog goalie Tamara Gordon made several nice saves to preserve the tie.

"In the second overtime I thought we would score, I really did," Roth said. "I'm proud of the way we played. I can't be upset with how hard we fought.

It was like a war and it was ugly soccer. It's kind of fun but it's ugly."

Despite the tie, Springville still sits in second place in Region 6 while Provo is in third. Springville will be at first place Timpview on Thursday.
