Passing tests up to kids

Recently the Utah Board of Education proposed a plan known as "Performance Plus," designed to motivate low-performing students to step up to the task of passing competency tests.

It is my opinion that passing a test is up to the student. For those students who couldn't care less, there is no help. The student who is willing and wants to get an education will benefit from the learning process, not the testing process.

Although in some cases testing is appropriate, I believe that there is far too much emphasis placed on testing in today's educational system. Students who value their education don't need tests to prove their comprehension.
