VOLLEYBALL: Utah State volleyball player Zuzana Cernianska earned Big West Conference co-player of the week honors as well as being named the first Utah State Athlete of the week of the 2003-04 school year it was announced on Monday.
Cernianska was named the Most Valuable Player of the Weber State Classic as she hit .367 and averaged 5.2 kills per game. The sophomore from Prague, Czech Republic had 52 kills overall as the Aggies defeated Southwest Texas State, Oral Roberts and Weber State.
SOCCER: Utah senior midfielder Amber Brower has been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. This is her first player of the week honor.
Brower, a Hyrum, Utah, native, scored two goals and had an assist as the Utes defeated Colgate and No. 17 Michigan last weekend.
FOOTBALL: Southern Utah's Tremaine Cox has been named this week's I-AA Independent Special Teams Player of the week while Mike Overly earned honor roll recognition for his defensive effort in SUU's 24-23 loss last Saturday at Nevada.
Cox, a junior running back/kick returner from Tucson, Ariz., returned two kickoffs for 108 yards against the Wolfpack, including one 91-yarder for a touchdown. The score gave the Thunderbirds a huge spark following a Nevada touchdown which gave the 'Pack a 14-3 edge. Cox's TD cut the deficit to four and set the stage for SUU to claim a 17-14 lead just two minutes later on a Casey Rehrer-to-Michael Culpepper pass play.
Overly, a junior linebacker from Boise, Idaho, tallied eight tackles, seven solo, with a two-yard tackle-for-loss and a forced fumble.
"We're very proud and happy to have Tremaine and Mike earn these honors," SUU Coach Gary Andersen said.
