AUSTIN BLAKE, Pine View: Take this junior running back out of the mix, and the top-ranked Panthers probably wouldn't be the only undefeated team remaining in Class 3A.
In the last three games, Blake has rushed for 463 yards on 38 carries, for a 12.2 rushing average and four touchdowns.
For the season he's rushed for six touchdowns and 560 yards.
Perhaps his biggest game of the season came last Friday, when he torched No. 2 Snow Canyon's defense for 148 yards and a score.
"You have to give the offensive line a lot of credit because they opened some big holes in the second half," Pine View coach RayHosner said. "Once Austin gets through that first hole, he is very, very dangerous."
LINDSAY LAURO, Cottonwood: This senior had a little more work to do to get in shape when the soccer season started in August. The four-year starter had knee surgery over the summer and missed the team's preseason games recovering. But even then she was an integral part of the Colts squad.
"She's one of my captains and a team leader that the girls still looked up to, even when she couldn't play," said coach Amanda Bollinger. "She had to work extra hard just to get ready to play."
In addition to the time she puts in leading Cottonwood to a no. 4 ranking, she maintains a 3.75 GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society and a student body officer.
"She has a lot of great leadership qualities," Bollinger said.
