I was very interested when I saw the TV news report on a fire and an investigation on the delay of eight minutes to a wrong address. As a mother of a sheriff dispatcher, I would like to pose a few questions.
Have you ever sat at the console of dispatch?
Have you ever tried to answer 100 calls?
Have you ever felt the responsibility of your actions being a life or death situation?
Probably not. Those who sit in judgment cannot do the job but are quick to blame.
There are times in our town that the dispatcher works a 12-hour shift. For the most part, these dispatchers work hard and deserve better.
Of course, while you are standing watching your home burn down, minutes seem like hours and help seems to be moving in slow motion. Dispatchers belong to the human race and should be treated fairly.
