Y. names new chief of communications

PROVO — Brigham Young University officials have selected Ed Adams to serve as the new head of the Department of Communications.

Adams said he received a letter Thursday notifying him of the appointment. He replaces former chairman Michael Perkins, who died Aug. 14 in a kayak accident on the Salmon River in Idaho.

Along with Adams, two associate leaders were named. Rich Long will serve as associate chairman over undergraduate studies, and Sherry Baker will serve as associate chairwoman over graduate studies.

"We have an excellent department and faculty, and I hope we continue to build on that excellence," Adams said.

Adams said he plans to encourage research and strong mentoring within the department. He said he will also devote time over the next two and a half years toward moving and expanding department facilities.

Adams, who lives in Springville, served as associate chairman for the department under the past two chairmen.

Adams has taught at universities in Texas and Ohio and managed a magazine publishing company in Phoenix for five years. He has focused on the business and economic history of the media, and his articles have appeared in numerous publications.
