ST. GEORGE, UT- <! > Samuel Gerald Banks, age 78, passed away in St. George, Utah.
He was born May 15, 1925 in Minersville, Utah to Carl Benjamin and Armina LeFever Banks. Sam married Martha Bailey Leatham on June 11, 1954 in the Logan LDS Temple. They had seven children. Martha passed away September 25, 1997. He then married Nona Draper in the St. George LDS Temple on November 27, 1998, and they were sealed a year later.
Sam retired from the Salt Lake City Water Department after 31 years of service. He was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a faithful hometeacher throughout his life, sometimes visiting up to 26 families in a month.
He served two missions for the church, first to the North Central States Mission and a second mission with his wife Martha, to the Arizona Phoenix Mission. He also served in the baptistry of the Jordan River and St. George LDS Temples.
Sam is survived by his wife Nona Banks; children, Mina (Kerry) Wayman, Lori (Joe) Huey, Jerry (Debbie) Banks, Lisa Roger) VanKomen, Melanie (Kevin) Sullivan, Bryan (Lisa) Banks, Mary (Wayne) Horlacher, Ann (Jim) Stokes, Wynn (Dixie) Cassity, Kit DeJournett, Lee F. (Marcia) Cassity and Rose Cassity; 49 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. He also survived by his brothers, George (Loretta) Banks, Norman (Judy) Banks and sister, Remerse Wilson. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Martha, two brothers, two sisters, one grandchild and one son-in-law.
Funeral services will be held, Monday, September 8, 2003 at 11 a.m., at the Buena Vista LDS Stake Center, 860 N. Fairway Dr., Washington, Utah. Visitations will be held Sunday, September 7, from 6-8 p.m., Metcalf Mortuary in St. George, UT., and Monday, September 8, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services at the Stake Center. Graveside services will be held, Tuesday, September 9, at 11 a.m., at the Redwood Memorial Cemetery, 6500 S. Redwood Rd., West Jordan, Utah, under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary 435-673-4221.
