Western Governors University can now offer three new programs in Utah for teaching degrees.

WGU, an online, competency-based university, won the Utah State Board of Education's approval Friday to offer:

A bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies and grades K-8 teaching certificate.

A master's in teaching, including a K-8 certificate.

A master's in mathematics education for K-6 mathematics or a teaching endorsement in K-8 or grades 9-12.

Arizona, Nevada and Texas have also granted approval for WGU teacher licensure programs.

"This is a very significant boon for Utah teachers, particularly in rural areas and for those who work full time," said WGU president Robert Mendenhall.

WGU's offerings are required by the state to meet standards set forth by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. In three years the board will look at test scores of WGU graduates to determine if the school meets NCATE standards.

Course selection through WGU is determined by a student's competency in a particular area of interest.
