WEST VALLEY CITY — A five-hour standoff between police and an apparently intoxicated man ended after the man apparently shot himself in the hip early Sunday.

The unidentified man was airlifted to LDS Hospital, where he was in stable condition Sunday night, West Valley Police Sgt. Vince Garcia said.

Late Saturday, the man and his wife returned to their house, near 5000 South and 5600 West, from a night out, Garcia said.

The man had been drinking. He became upset and grabbed a gun. That scared his wife. She left with their young daughter, Garcia said. The man's mother also was at the house for a while, but he became belligerent with her and she left, Garcia said.

From 12:30 to 5:30 a.m., a SWAT team surrounded the house and tried unsuccessfully to negotiate a surrender, Garcia said.

During the standoff, the man fired about a half dozen gunshots. It was unknown whether the man intentionally shot himself, Garcia said. He was unconscious when he was transported to the hospital.
