SCORE: Southern California 35, BYU 18
RECORDS: BYU 1-1, USC 2-0
OFFENSE: Matt Berry completed 27-of-39 passes for 297 yards, and the offense seemed to click for much of the second half and outgained the Trojans in total yards, 359-306. But three interceptions, two fumbles, a half-dozen sacks, a mediocre running game and other obvious miscues — remember the reverse? — need to be corrected. GRADE: B-minus
DEFENSE: Yes, the Trojans scored 35 points, but one TD was a returned interception and two others came on series that started on BYU's 21 and 11. The Cougars "D" came up with a safety, three interceptions and the midgame momentum that helped jumpstart the offense. GRADE: B-plus
SPECIAL TEAMS: Matt Payne booted three FGs, including a pair from 50-plus yards, and averaged 44.3 yards on six punts, with a pair inside the Trojan 20. But David Christensen's fumble on a punt return and USC's 30-yard fourth-quarter kickoff return to the 43-yard line led to critical Trojan scores. GRADE: B-minus
