Dear Friends: Did you know that if you miss just one credit payment, it can affect your credit rating? If you are planning on making a purchase for which your credit will be checked (like a car or house) or applying for a credit card, check your credit rating first so you won't be surprised. Request a copy of your credit history from a local credit bureau (there might be a small charge).
Here are the three major consumer reporting agencies, along with their telephone numbers. Give them a call:
TransUnion — toll-free telephone number: 1-800-888-4213.
Equifax Inc. — toll-free telephone number: 1-800-685-1111.
Experian Credit Marketing — toll-free telephone number: 1-888-397-3742.
Remember, keeping track of your credit is very important! You don't want a surprise or disappointment when you need to obtain credit for something. — Heloise
Dear Heloise: My dad showed me this one: If you strip out a wood screw (or any other kind of screw), stuff toothpicks into the hole and break them off flush with the surface, then screw the screw into the hole again.
For more permanent applications, add some household glue to the hole first, then the toothpicks. Hope this helps others as it has me through the years! — Rick Buhite, Via E-mail
Dear Heloise: I have clipped all sorts of ideas and helpful information from your columns and others, but they have been almost impossible to find, stuck here and there — until now.
I have a spiral notebook for no other purpose than clippings. When I paste one in, I list it on an index page, giving the page number in the notebook. — Bette Vogler, Amarillo, Texas
Dear Heloise: Here's how I make delicious lemon cubes for iced or hot tea: Just peel, slice and remove the seeds from several lemons, put the lemons in the blender and liquefy. Pour the liquid into ice-cube trays and freeze. — B.B. in Louisiana
If you have leftover tea or coffee, use it to make ice cubes. They will not dilute a glass of iced coffee or tea. For other fun tea recipes, send for my four-page Coffee and Tea Pamphlet. Please send $3 and a long, self-addressed, stamped (83 cents) envelope to: Heloise/CT, P.O. Box 795001, San Antonio, TX 78279-5001. For a limited time, anyone who orders a pamphlet will receive a different, additional Heloise pamphlet for free. As an added flavor enhancer, try using a cinnamon or peppermint stick for a stirrer in your favorite tea. — Heloise
