I am writting in favor of the bill to give undocumented workers legal status. These workers in the main are paying both federal and local taxes. Children of these workers are excelling in school and going to college. These people have the same goals of advancement that the immigrants 100 years ago had. They flee oppressive regimes, failed economies and seek to advance hopes, more often for their children then themselves.
It is because they take minimum wage jobs that housing prices do not increase faster and so many other things are affordable. The only way to overcome the exploitation and underpayment of these undocumented workers is to provide them legal status.
I laud the intention of President Bush, Sen. Orrin Hatch, Reps. Jeff Flake and Chris Cannon and all others who are helping move forward this positive work.
