Obituary: Opal Frances Gilbert Shafer

- Opal Frances Gilbert Shafer, 93, passed away Friday, October 8, 2004 at home.

Opal was born November 19, 1910 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the first of nine children born to James Walter Gilbert and Fannie Bacca Lambson.

She grew up in the Mormon colonies of Chuichupa and Pacheco in Chichuahua, Mexico. After leaving Mexico she lived most of her adult life in Arizona and Southern California. Being in poor health she has lived with her sister and brother-in-law, Wayland and Viola Ashmore, in Fruit Heights, for the past seven years.

A faithful Latter-day Saint, she resided in the Hidden Valley Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survived by sons, Edwin Francis Fenn (Gail), Centerville, Earl Walter Jorgenson (Roma), Melbourne, Australia; six grandchildren; 21 great-grand-children; and three great-great-grandchildren; brothers, James Claude Gilbert (Hazel), Payson, AZ, Donald Walter Gilbert, Thousand Oaks, CA; sister, Viola Gilbert Ashmore (Wayland), Fruit Heights; and the loving nieces and nephews who gave loving support during her last few months. Preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William Alonzo Gilbert, Eugene Gilbert; sisters, Ercelle Ruby Redd; Anna Edna Miller, Barbara Gilbert.

At Opal's request, there will be no viewing and only a simple graveside service Tuesday, October 12, 2004, 3 p.m. at the Lindquist's Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 N. Fairfield Road.

The family wants to express appreciation for the outstanding support given by Rocky Mountain Hospice.
