Spanish Fork Dons
The numbers: Welsh missed three games with a knee injury, and the Dons clearly missed him. In his first game back last week, the senior captain had scoring runs of 21 yards and 86 yards. He also had an 86-yard run called back. He intercepted two passes and ran one of them back 96 yards for a touchdown, putting the game against Payson on ice. Dons coaches say Welsh, also a star on the baseball team, is a leader on and off the field and is an integral part of the team on both sides of the ball.
Lone Peak Knights
Event: No. 1 singles
The numbers: The hard-serving Doerr opened a lot of eyes with her play this season on her way to the state 4A singles title. In almost 40 matches this year, she lost less than 30 games and lost only one set. After cruising to the final match last week she found herself trailing 5-1 in the first set, but battled back to win the set 7-6 in a tiebreaker. Then after losing the second set 6-2 to Bountiful's Dee Dee Nelson, the only set she lost all season, Doerr rallied to take the final set 6-2 and walk away with the first-place trophy.
