A Salt Lake police officer suffered minor injuries in a traffic accident Thursday when he allegedly ran a red light on his way to a call and hit a sport utility vehicle.
Lonnie Martinez, who has three years on the force, was headed south on 700 East, where he ran the light at 500 South and hit an SUV driven by Steven Smith, 19, of Salt Lake City, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Wade Breur said.
Smith was headed west on 500 South and was nearly through the intersection when the patrol car struck the passenger side of his vehicle.
Neither driver appeared to be speeding, and Martinez was not using lights or sirens, Breur said.
Smith was not injured. Martinez was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.
Martinez likely will be off work for several days recovering from his injuries before he returns to patrol, Salt Lake police detective Dwayne Baird said.
