Brigham Young

SOCCER: The first meeting between BYU and Texas was a thriller in Austin Thursday, as the Cougars fought from behind to score two second-half goals, but fell in overtime 3-2.

Texas got goals from Kelly McDonald and Ashley Foster and outshot the Cougars 9-5 going into halftime. Rallying in the second half, BYU scored on a goal by sophomore defender Claire Thomas off a corner kick by sophomore Bobbi Tillotson. Jaime Rendich scored from 40 yards out to take the game into overtime.

Just four minutes into overtime, Texas won the game on a goal by Amy Burlingham.

BYU resumes conference play Saturday in Colorado Springs, against Air Force at 7 p.m.

Utah State

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Utah State (4-7-1) looks to stay undefeated at home this season as it welcomes Long Beach State to Logan for a 3 p.m. matchup today. USU is 3-0 thus far at home and has outscored its opponents 13-0 in those matches.

Long Beach State is 5-6-2 on the year with a 0-3-1 Big West mark after going 0-1-1 last weekend. The Aggies and 49ers will meet for the seventh time on Friday, with Long Beach owning the 5-1 all-time advantage, including five straight matches. Long Beach has outscored the Aggies 12-3 during its five-match winning streak against the Aggies.

Utah Valley

SOCCER: Utah Valley State lost 5-1 to Portland State on Thursday despite outshooting the Vikings 16-14.

"We are just struggling to finish and defend," Wolverine coach Gabe Smart said. "We can't get it together."

Utah Valley trailed 2-0 20 minutes into the first half thanks to two goals by Sophia Mundy. Alyssa Woodbury put the Wolverines on the board in the 24th minute when her shot from eight yards out deflected off the Viking keeper and into the goal. Carolyn Theurer recorded her sixth assist of the season on the play.

Portland State led 2-1 at halftime and added goals in the 50th, 60th and 61st minute to put the game away.

The Wolverines play at Utah at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Southern Utah

FOOTBALL: Southern Utah hits the road again this week for its first Great West Conference road game. The Thunderbirds (2-3) take on North Dakota State in Fargo, N.D., at noon on Saturday.

Southern Utah is 2-2 on the road this season. Only one of its games has been at home. The Thunderbirds are coming off a 24-17 homecoming loss to No. 9 Cal Poly in Cedar City.

Southern Utah's losses have all been by less than a touchdown. Cal Poly was the Thunderbirds' third straight ranked opponent.

North Dakota State (4-2) is also looking to bounce back after a loss. The Bison dropped a 24-21 decision in the final minute at South Dakota State last Saturday. The Bison, who are 3-0 at home this season, had won two straight.

Saturday's game will be the first meeting between the two schools.

SOCCER: Chelsea Reichard, a team captain and senior center midfielder for Skyline's Lady Eagles soccer team, has verbally accepted an Academic Merit and Athletic Scholarship to Regis University in Denver. Regis University is a top tier Division 2 soccer program coached by J.B. Belzer.
