Orem police arrest man in carjacking

OREM — Police arrested a man Friday who led police on a chase in a car he allegedly stole from an elderly man in an Orem police parking lot.

The car struck several other cars — including a police squad car — during the Friday afternoon incident that started when Utah Highway Patrol troopers saw the man walking on I-15 near Provo. The man fled on foot when a trooper approached. Later, police said, the same man requested a ride from an elderly man, who told police the man said the word "police" several times.

The driver thought the man meant that he needed police help. The man drove to Orem's police station where a disturbance between the two began. When police approached the car, the man pushed the elderly driver out and sped off, the car striking several parked vehicles.

Police pursued the car for several miles, then made an arrest at 1300 S. University Parkway after the car rammed a police car and another car. The man was taken into custody after a brief struggle.
