COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Utah quarterback Alex Smith, San Diego State linebacker Kirk Morrison and New Mexico punter Tyler Gaus were named Mountain West Conference players of the week on Monday.
Smith, the offensive player for the third time this season and the sixth time in his career, led No. 11 Utah to a 46-16 victory over North Carolina. He completed 29 of 37 passes for 341 yards and four touchdowns, and ran 10 times for 55 yards and a touchdown.
Morrison won his second defensive award by making 14 tackles, including eight solo, in San Diego State's 21-17 loss to Colorado State on Saturday. He also had two tackles for a loss, forced one fumble and had one fumble recovery.
Gaus, honored with his first special teams award, averaged 41.6 yards on eight punts in New Mexico's 24-20 win at UNLV on Saturday.
His kicks left UNLV starting from behind their own 13 yard line four times. His 53-yard punt put the Rebels at their own 6 to start their final drive. New Mexico managed to force a fumble at midfield to salvage the victory.
