Don't blame the disabled

I am disappointed in the Associated Press story, "Disabled workers were overpaid." As an advocate at the Disability Law Center, I see first-hand the difficulty people with disabilities confront when faced with an overpayment from Social Security.

The individuals I have worked with have all struggled to get accurate information about their benefits, made requests for payment changes only to find they have been ignored or were not processed in a timely manner and have been penalized for Social Security's own mistakes.

The GAO report correctly concludes that the system is broken, but focusing blame on people with disabilities is an easy solution to a very complex problem.

It is the Disability Law Center's hope that the GAO report will be used to help fix the Social Security system and not be used as a tool to further marginalize people with disabilities.
