Airline passenger jailed for assault

A Salt Lake man will serve 10 days in jail, followed by three months in a halfway house, for striking a flight attendant aboard a Northwest Airlines flight during a June midair confrontation.

U.S. Magistrate Brooke Wells on Monday imposed the sentence on Troy Robert Graf, denying a defense request to find an alternative to jail time.

"The difficulty is the past and the very serious nature of what happened on that plane," Wells said, noting Graf's prior state convictions for largely alcohol-related incidents. "My concern is that when you drink, you pose an enormous hazard to other people."

Graf pleaded guilty in August to one class B misdemeanor charge of assault on an aircraft.

Graf already has written a letter of apology to the flight attendant, and Monday in court he apologized again for his actions.
